2026 Volvo XC90 vs. Audi Q7
Standing out in a segment as competitive as the luxury midsize SUV is no easy feat. This class features many stylish models that offer roomy, opulent cabins and advanced in-car technologies. Nevertheless, two names that consistently feature at the top of this category are the 2026 Volvo XC90 and the Audi Q7.
Both models are returning in 2026, the former on the back of massive updates from the previous year and the latter getting a complete facelift. If you're looking for a new family hauler, join us as we compare the latest iterations of these coveted SUVs to discover which reigns supreme.
Performance and Powertrain
The 2026 Volvo XC90 comes with three powertrain options. The base B5 engine comprises a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This setup cranks out 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. The B6 powertrain ramps up its output to 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
The XC90 also offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which is standard on the range-topping T8 trim. It comprises the aforementioned 2.0-liter turbocharged engine paired with dual electric motors and an 18. 8 kWh battery. This setup produces a combined 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque.
While details on the 2026 Audi Q7's engine specs are yet to be released, we can confirm that the model will ride on Audi's Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. We'll likely see a four-cylinder with a hybrid or plug-in hybrid system on the base model and a V-6 with a hybrid component on higher trims. We also expect the new powertrains to be more powerful than the ones currently offered on the Q7.
Audi equips every 2025 Q7 with its turbocharged fuel-stratified-injection (TFSI) technology. The Q7 45 TFSI is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The Q7 55 TFSI models come with a more powerful 3.0-liter V-6 engine, outputting 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Like the current model year, the 2026 Audi Q7 engines are expected to pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard quattro all-wheel drive. This is similar to the transmission and drivetrain offered on every 2026 Volvo XC90 model, regardless of powertrain or trim level.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Space
Inside, both the 2026 Volvo XC90 and the Audi Q7 offer beautifully designed cabins with seating for up to seven passengers. The Volvo XC90 offers generous legroom across both the front and second rows, with 40.9 inches of legroom in the front and 37 inches in the second row. However, the third row is slightly smaller, with 31.9 inches of legroom, making it best reserved for children.
While details on the 2026 Audi Q7's interior dimensions have not been released, we expect it to retain the specifications of the current model year. The 2025 model offers 41.7 inches of legroom in the front row and 38.8 inches in the second row.
The new XC90 and the redesigned Audi Q7 are closely matched, but the Volvo wins when it comes to cargo capacity. With the second and third rows of seats folded down, the XC90 provides up to 85.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The Audi Q7, assuming its dimensions remain unchanged from the previous model year, offers 69.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows of seats folded.
The Volvo XC90's cabin is characterized by high-quality, eco-friendly materials and a minimalist Scandinavian design, resulting in a practical yet upscale appearance. While most models feature high-end fabric-upholstered seating surfaces, the top-of-the-range T8 variant comes with nappa leather, giving its cabin a more expensive look. The new Volvo XC90 also features a panoramic sunroof that enhances natural light inside the cabin, providing an open-air driving experience.
Audi has yet to release the interior details of the redesigned Q7. However, based on spy shots that have leaked so far, we anticipate it'll feature leather-trimmed seating, more so on higher trims. The model will also feature a simple driver-focused dashboard design with few physical controls and a space-efficient gear stick located in the center console.
Technology and Connectivity Features
The Volvo XC90 offers an 11.2-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster in all trims. While the new infotainment display utilizes a Google-based infotainment software, Apple CarPlay still comes standard. Other noteworthy entertainment and connectivity features available in the new Volvo XC90 include an optional 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a wireless charging pad, Google voice assistant, and USB-C charging ports.
Audi has yet to announce the infotainment features of the new Audi Q7. However, we expect it to have a large infotainment display. Its immediate predecessor, the 2025 Q7, featured a 12.3-inch high-definition Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touch screen for infotainment, and an 8.6-inch touch screen to control climate settings and handwriting input. We don't foresee Audi settling for anything less next time around. Other likely infotainment features include a customizable digital instrument cluster, a wireless charging pad, and a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
One of the Volvo XC90's biggest selling points has always been its advanced driver-assistance features, and the 2026 model is no different with. It retains many driver-assistance systems from its predecessor, including front and rear automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams.
While the details on the 2026 Audi Q7's safety features are yet to be released, we anticipate it will be equipped with many similar advanced driver-assistance technologies. Reports suggest the inclusion of Level 2+ autonomous driving systems and Smart Remote Park Assist Plus.
