2026 Volvo Standard & Optional Safety Features
The Volvo brand has long been synonymous with safety, from its early pioneering of the three-point safety belt to its modern usage of technology that actively scans and prevents accidents. In fact, Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin invented the three-point restraint, and Volvo patented the invention. What really stands out is Volvo licensing their invention to other automakers for free, as they realized it had the potential to save lives and reduce injuries.
This overarching commitment to safety has always driven Volvo to research and develop cutting-edge solutions that make driving safer and easier. Join us as we explore 2026 Volvo standard & optional safety features that continue to keep Volvo at the forefront of vehicle safety.
Standard Safety Features Across All 2026 Volvo Models
Volvo engineers use a combination of technologies to produce a suite of standard safety features across all models.
City Safety Collision Avoidance
Their City Safety Collision Avoidance system is a prime example of utilizing technology to improve safety. This system uses cameras, radar, and laser sensors to scan ahead of your vehicle. This suite includes Volvo's new intersection safety technology that detects oncoming vehicles as you turn through an intersection. It can apply the brakes if necessary.
This system can detect pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals in addition to cars. When it detects a possible collision, the system sends audio, visual, and vibration signals through the brake pedal to alert the driver. If the driver fails to react, the system will engage emergency braking to help mitigate or avoid a potential accident. Some Volvo models include emergency steering assistance with this suite, which helps you steer around an obstacle.
Pilot Assist Semi-Autonomous Driving
Volvo's Pilot Assist technology enhances your automatic cruise control system. Simply set your desired speed, and your car will maintain that speed while automatically adjusting it to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. This system can slow your Volvo to a complete stop without driver input if necessary and will return you to your preset speed as the traffic ahead clears. Pilot Assist also scans for lane markings and uses gentle steering input to keep you centered in your lane.
Vision Enhancement Technologies
Volvo uses automatic high beam LED headlights to help you see better without blinding oncoming traffic. Other vision enhancement technologies include the blind spot information system that gives you eyes where you normally can't see. This system uses cameras integrated in the sideview mirrors that monitor your blind spots and alert you when vehicles enter them.
The Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake system uses similar technology to scan behind your Volvo while in reverse. This system can detect cars, cyclists, and pedestrians crossing behind your vehicle and alert you. If you react slowly, the system will engage emergency braking to help potentially avoid a collision.
Structural Safety Features
Volvo uses ultra-high-strength steel in its A-pillars, roof rails, and B-pillars to create a cage around vehicle occupants. This rigid construction keeps the cabin intact, aided by crumple zones designed to collapse and absorb energy during a collision.
The structural safety design is enhanced by advanced air bag systems. Volvo installs front, side, and curtain air bags in every vehicle that deploy based on occupant position, impact severity, and seat belt use. An occupant sensing system enhances air bag usage by detecting children or small persons in the front passenger seat and turning off the deployment to reduce injury from the air bag. This system is so advanced that it can detect an infant breathing in the rear seat and will alert you should you unintentionally leave your baby in the car.
Volvo also developed its WHIPS whiplash protection system to help reduce the likelihood of passengers suffering this injury during a rear-end collision. When this system detects an impact to your vehicle from behind, it moves the front seat backrest rearward and the cushions down. This movement adjusts based on how extreme the impact is and helps absorb the energy that would otherwise cause whiplash.
Optional Advanced Safety Packages by Model
Every Volvo model has optional advanced safety systems in addition to the standard suite.
XC40 Optional Safety Features
Buyers considering the compact SUV Volvo XC40 can opt for the 360-degree camera system. This technology uses cameras mounted around your vehicle to render a bird's-eye view of your XC40 on your center console. This live video helps you navigate tight parking and narrow streets around Mission Viejo.
Another option is the Park Assist Pilot, which can steer you into a parallel or perpendicular parking spot while you operate the gas and brake pedals. An optional Run-off Road Mitigation system helps prevent you from leaving the road entirely by scanning and alerting you when your Volvo drifts off the road. This system can provide steering and brake support to help keep you on the road.
XC60 Optional Safety Upgrades
Volvo's Four-C Adaptive Chassis uses sensors and a powerful microprocessor to monitor speed, yaw, pitch, and roll and adjust the suspension for optimal performance and comfort. An optional air suspension system can adjust your XC60's ride height lower for improved aerodynamics or higher for better ground clearance. You can equip your Volvo XC60 with enhanced road sign recognition that displays the current rules of the road based on camera recognition and map data.
XC90 Premium Safety Options
An optional head-up display system for the Volvo XC90 projects critical driving information like collision warnings, speed, and navigation onto the windshield above the steering wheel, helping you keep your eyes forward while receiving important information.
You can opt for the Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system with safety alerts, which provides audible alerts from specific speakers to indicate the direction of the alert. And the optional Advanced Driver Assistance Pro Package bundles all the standard and optional safety systems in the XC40 and XC60.
