Four-Wheel Alignment vs. Two-Wheel Alignment

A four-wheel alignment is necessary for vehicles that can move all four wheels then they turn, these vehicles being 4WD or AWD vehicles. This is because a wheel that can move is a wheel that can be bumped out of alignment. Two-wheel alignments, however, are only for 2WD cars because those cars only turn two of their wheels. The other two are held in place by a fixed axle, which keeps them pointed straight forward at all times, making them invulnerable to misalignment.

What Is an Alignment

Alignment refers to the angle of your car’s wheels. There are three angles at which your tires sit, called camber, caster, and toe. The camber refers to how much the top of the wheel is pointed inward or outward, and the toe refers to how much the front of the wheel is pointed outward or inward. The caster refers to the angle of the wheel in relation to the strut and how much the strut is angled forwards or backward. Adjusting these angles to those recommended by the manufacturer is an alignment service.
